MIA - Portugal

The Multidisciplinary Institute on Ageing (MIA-Portugal) is a highly competitive and sustainable producer of knowledge and knowledge transfer based on fundamental research in order to deliver health innovation and technology transfer. The excellence of MIA-Portugal’s research forms the solid foundation that supports the pillars of advanced teaching, innovation and technology transfer as well as translational and clinical research. It also serves as a roof that provides consistency and protection.

MIA-Portugal is the first centre of excellence devoted to fundamental and translational ageing research, in southern Europe and in low-performing member states, into reducing disparities between regions and bridging the gap between fundamental research and its translation into human intervention.

Our main goal is to generate excellent science and innovation potential to improve the health and wellbeing of an ageing population and, in doing so, to deliver business opportunities to the region. To ensure the smooth translation of knowledge generated by MIA or its international partners into interventions that can improve the health and wellbeing of an ageing population, MIA-Portugal will be embedded into the Ageing@Coimbra Vitality Campus. This campus is an age-friendly urban environment, knowledge triangle and European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing (EIP-AHA) reference site.
